How the Eiffel Tower was Built, Beautifying Paris


Eiffel tower is a world-famous iron structure in France. When we see a picture of the Eiffel Tower, Paris city and France comes to our mind. It is so accustomed to the eyes of people.  It symbolizes   France. The history of this gigantic tower goes back to One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighties.

The company that won the competition

There was a wide competition to build a landmark in France to common rate the centenary of French revolution. The winning one was the presentation of Gustav Eiffel Company design of Iron structure.  As the design of this iron tower was presented by the Eiffel Company, it became the Eiffel Tower. Gustav Eiffel was only one of the two engineers in the Company. The main contractor was Company des Establishment Eiffel.  Approval was given to locate this gigantic tower at the 5 Avenue Anatole, Paris, France.

The construction company was specialized in building large-scale metal structures. Parents of Gustave Eiffel are Germans. They had immigrated to France and changed their names as Eiffel. Gustave Eiffel who gave the leadership to build this fantastic structure was a civil engineer.

Height of Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower is 300 metres high without antenna. With Antena its height is 324 metres. Prior to Eiffel Tower there were no any structure constructed to this height. The construction was started on 28th January in 1887. The work of building this structure ended on 31, 1889 and opened on the same day. The arch of the tower used as the entrance to the Word Fair held in 1889.

Eiffel Company used cast iron and wrought iron as primary construction material. Nearly 18,000 iron pieces were used for this construction, because this is a lattice tower.  Eiffel factory prepared all these pieces itself with 100% accuracy.  Gustave Eiffel Company imported 10,000 tons of iron lattice from Resita and Govajdia in Romania. At first iron pieces of Eiffel tower fixed with nut and bolts. Later the assembling turned to rivet system. At that time this rivet system was the accepted method of fixing iron pieces.

Why the Eiffel Tower by its nickname?

The local name of this tower is ‘La dame de fer  ’; the meaning in French is ‘Iron Lady’. At the initial stage, leading French artists and intellectuals badly criticised this construction. But it has become a global cultural icon in the world.

At the top of the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel tower has three floors. All these floors; 1st, 2nd and summit floor are open to public. There are staircase and elevators to climb to 1st and 2nd floors. If you wish to climb on foot, from bottom to 2nd floor you have to climb 674 steps. From the esplanade to top, there are 1665 steps.

One of the best places to see the panoramic view of the Eiffel Tower is from a river boat of a cruise. Another place to feel the beauty of Eiffel Tower is Montparnasse Tower.

The view from the summit of Eiffel Tower is spectacular. There is a deck to see the surrounding. If you want to see everything in Paris, the best spot is the summit of this ‘Iron Lady’. It doesn’t matter whether it is day or night you can see a unique enchanting view around Paris. You can extract fabulous photos of Paris in to you camera.

You have to buy tickets to climb the Tower. The price of a ticket varies from age to age. It is advisable to buy tickets on-line. Otherwise may have to waist your valuable time for long ques.

You can climb the Tower from 9.30 am to 11.00 pm. at night.
