This natural gift is the largest coral reef in the world. There are more than 2900 individual reefs. The full area covers nearly 344,400 sq.km.

UNICEF accepted this Reef as a World Heritage in 1981. It shows the fervent irreplaceability of this natural wealth. More than 1500 species of fish live around this reef and over 134 species of sharks roam around them.

Dwarf minckey whales, Bottlenose Dolphins are among the commonly sighted species of whales around this World Heritage Area. In this whales society even killer whales are not rare.

More whales make their journey from the cool waters of Antarctica to the warm, shallow waters of the Great Barrier Reef to breed and have their calves. Not only the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef but abundance of food is another reason for their coming to the reef area. Among 2800 plant species,algae and sea grasses are two main types of plants in the Coral reef system. The animals that live on the reef can get their food and Oxygen from this algae. As the sea grasses give shelter for juvenile reef animals like conch and lobster, algae is a very important plant in this area. Among the 2800 plant species 700 varieties cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Coral belongs to animals because they do not make their own food as plants do. Corals have tiny tentacle – like arms to capture their food. So it differs from plants.

We can observe about 600 different types of coral within the Great Barrier Reef marine park. Staghorn variety is the most common type coral in this area. It is a hard coral.

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest natural gift to mankind which belongs to the seven Wonders.

Coral reefs take part in protecting coastlines from storms and erosion. It     supplies jobs for local public. They are also a source of food and new medicine. More than half a billion people depend on reefs for food, income and protection.

Modernization and development have badly affected for this great natural resource. Great Barrier Reef has lost half of its corals since 1995 because these of reasons. Coral Reefs are thermally sensitive.

They can only tolerate small temperature ranges. As a result of modern development, the heat waves are affecting the environment. Globally our climate is undergoing weather changes to a the bad tend. Day by day the world’s atmosphere is heating in appalling rate, as a result of human activities. To turn the tide of heating the whole world should join hands, sheding political and other differences.

The Great Barrier Reef has experienced two major bleaching within recent decades. How does the atmosphere heating affect to bleach the corals? Tiny colorful marine algae which live inside corals, provides them with much of their color. Most importantly their primary supply of energy, dies, because of the increasing temperature of the surface of the sea. The loss of algae, refers to coral bleaching. The coral may die perpetually if such unfavorable situation exists any further.

The Great Barrier Reef is a fountain of money. Approximately a contribution of 5.4 dollar billion pumps to the Australian economy annually by visiting this fantastic by nature lovers. This is the single biggest structure made by living organism which can be seen from the outer space.

Some major threats to this treasure are climate change, sea water contamination combined with rising sea temperature and acidification. They are constantly damaging this valuable natural treasure.

You can voluntarily help to a beach clean-up programme. Keep a swollen hearts regarding the preservation of this irreplaceable treasure for our unborn generation. If we do not protect this we would be subjected to their curse.
